Case Summary

The applicant has been a member of the Sudanese Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) since the early 1980s. She joined the party because of her belief in democratic values, such as tolerance, equality of women, and the value of multiculturalism. Because of her involvement distributing fliers for the DUP, the applicant was arrested as a teenager for distributing ¯¿½anti-government¯¿½ information. The police tied her hands together and kicked and hit her. One of the officers also whipped her with a leather belt, from which she still has scars. She also permanently lost one toenail when the metal buckle of the belt hit it. The applicant was detained for a week, interrogated on the first day, and beaten every day. She was fed only once every other day. She was not released until her father came and signed an affidavit stating that she would stop participating in DUP activities. The applicant¯¿½s husband was also arrested twice because of his involvement with the DUP. He was fired from his job. The applicant continued to teach and support their family. However, her supervisor continually threatened to have her fired if she did not join the governing party, the National Islamic Front. She was also denied a pay raise for years because of her membership in the DUP. The applicant fled Sudan in 1999 because a friend told her of plans to arrest her. Since she fled, state security officials have come to her home looking for her. She cannot contact her husband or their children because it would put them in danger. The applicant fears that she will be arrested and either tortured or killed if she returns. Further, the applicant was forced to undergo FGM when she was six years old, although both her parents oppose the practice. She was home alone with her grandmother when two women came to the house and performed FGM on her. Her grandmother was powerless to stop them. The applicant has refused to subject her daughter to FGM, and as a result, her daughter has not been allowed to attend school. Government agents have instructed the applicant¯¿½s mother-in-law to pressure her to subject her daughter to FGM.
