Hunger Strike to End Impunity in Guatemala

On Saturday January 12, 2008, internationally-recognized human rights defender, Amílcar Méndez, and his wife, Miriam Dardón – along with their family – began a hunger strike at the entrance of the official residence of the President in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The strike served as a peaceful and public protest of the violent deaths of tens of thousands of Guatemalans, including their son Pepe, and of the virtual state of impunity that has existed for the perpetrators of this violence under the government of President Oscar Berger.

Huelga de Hambre Para Poner Fin a la Impunidad en Guatemala

El dia sabado, 12 de enero de 2008, Amilcar Méndez, defensor de derechos humanos, y su esposa Miriam Dardón - junto con su familia - comenzaron una huelga de hambre en la entrada de la Casa Presidencial en la Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala.  La huelga se dio como una protesta pública y pacífica por las muertes violentas de los miles de guatemaltecos, incluyendo su hijo Pepe, y por el estado de impunidad que existe para aquellos que han perpetrado estos crímenes con total impunidad en el gobierno a cargo del Presidente Oscar Berger.

Petition Update

On Monday January 14, the Mendez family ended their hunger strike. More than 1,000 concerned individuals signed the petition asking Guatemalan officials to respect their constitutional right to peaceful protest

Incoming Vice President Dr. Rafael Espada came to see the family while they were still striking outside the entrance to the official residence of the President. Vice President Espada committed to meeting with the family in order to discuss the investigation into Pepe’s murder as well as the overall state of impunity in Guatemala. The family has asked for continued support until they are able to meet with members of President Colom’s cabinet as well as the other officials to whom the petition was sent.

The family expressed their gratitude, not just for the outpouring of solidarity during the hunger strike, but for the larger struggle for justice and to end impunity in Guatemala.

Ultimas Noticias sobre la Peticion

El día lunes 14 de enero, la familia Méndez finalizó la huelga de hambre. Mas de 1.000 individuos firmaron la peticion pidiendo a las autoridades guatemaltecas que se respete su derecho constitucional de protestar pacíficamente.

El Vicepresidente entrante, Dr. Rafael Espada salió a ver a la familia cuando aún estaban en huelga frente a la entrada de la Casa Presidencial. El Vicepresidente Espada se comprometió a reunirse con la familia para hablar sobre la investigación del asesinato de Pepe así como el estado general de impunidad que existe en Guatemala. La familia ha pedido apoyo continuo hasta que puedan reunirse con los distintos miembros del gabinete del Presidente Colom, así como con los otros funcionarios a quienes se envió la petición.

La familia ha expresado su gratitud por la efusión de solidaridad, no solo durante la huelga de hambre, sino también durante la lucha por la justicia y el fin de la impunidad en Guatemala.
